What is a Bio Impedance Analysis Test?
BIA stands for bioimpedance analysis. It measures your percentage of lean body mass versus fat mass and in addition to other assessments provides a snapshot of your health status. Even if you think your weight is healthy, you can still have an unhealthy or altered body composition. What is an unhealthy body composition? Generally speaking, it refers to carrying too much fat in comparison to muscle—often referred to as having a high fat-to-lean ratio. The former is just what the term implies—fat. The latter is everything that is not fat: mostly muscle along with bones, visceral organs, other tissues, and fluid.
More than just stepping on a scale
Body composition is more than just stepping on a scale and measuring your weight. In fact, even those who appear to be thin on the outside are at risk for many diseases because they have too much fat on the inside! Determination of body composition is therefore becoming an integral part of health and nutritional assessment. Our BIA test is an accurate way to determine your body composition is through a method called Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). BIA is a quick, non-invasive method of assessing body composition that uses electric signals at different frequencies, which are slowed down or “impeded” depending on the amount of water, fat, and fat-free mass in your body.
